Cross-border trucking between Canada and the U.S.

Canada–U.S. freight is the core of what we do. About seven in ten KTG loads cross the border, on our own trucks with our own drivers.

Why shippers choose KTG for cross-border freight

Crossing the border is where loads get delayed: a missing eManifest, a paperwork mismatch or a long lineup can cost you a full day. We've built our operation around avoiding that.

  • Customs filed in-house. Our team files ACI eManifests (for Canada) and ACE eManifests (for the U.S.) ourselves, so we never wait on an outside service.
  • Trusted-trader programs. We're FAST approved and members of C-TPAT and PIP, and we take part in CSA. Border agencies treat members as lower risk, which usually means fewer inspections and shorter waits.
  • U.S. Customs bonded carrier. We can move freight in bond, before duties are paid, which gives you more options for where your freight clears.
  • Hazmat certified. Regulated loads can cross with us too.
  • Asset-based. Your freight stays on KTG trucks, driven by KTG drivers, from pickup to delivery.

Our credentials article explains what each of these programs means for your freight.

Where we cross

Depending on where your freight is going, we cross at Windsor–Detroit (the Ambassador Bridge or the Gordie Howe International Bridge) or Sarnia–Port Huron (the Blue Water Bridge). We pick the crossing that gets your load there fastest, not just the shortest route on the map.

Our busiest cross-border lanes

From Ontario, 84% of our out-of-province deliveries go to the United States. Our top U.S. destinations are Tennessee, Missouri, Kentucky, Iowa and Wisconsin, and we serve 35+ states and provinces in total. We also run to Texas, California and Utah. See all the routes we run.

We also run to Mexico with our own trucks and team drivers.

What we need from you

To get your freight across without delays, have these ready before pickup:

  • Your customs broker's name and contact details
  • A commercial invoice with accurate descriptions, quantities and values
  • Any permits or certificates your goods need, such as for regulated or dangerous goods

Our guide to shipping from Ontario to the USA covers the paperwork in more detail.

Common questions

Yes. KTG is FAST approved and a member of C-TPAT and PIP, which help freight clear the border quickly and securely.

Which border crossings do you use?

Mostly Windsor–Detroit (the Ambassador and Gordie Howe bridges) and Sarnia–Port Huron (the Blue Water Bridge), whichever gets your freight there fastest.
